Meelis Friedenthal, the author of a gripping novel titled Bees was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature.

Bees (Mesilased, 2012) is Meelis Friedenthal’s second novel, a dreamlike story written with a historian’s sense for detail. It tells of a 17th century university student who has come from Leiden to Tartu in Livonia to study. The book is also equipped with an extended afterword by the author.

The European Union Prize for Literature rewards the best new or emerging authors throughout Europe. Tiit Aleksejev has won the same prize in 2010 for his historical novel The Pilgrimage.
